This is Antonia, she is a kind, smart woman who went to college to study conservation. She posed for some of Florence’s top painters and worked in wood conservation for a long time. Today, she is homeless and she lives on the streets of Florence. Homeless shelters are not an option for her because here they are often unsafe.
As this painting illustrates, Antonia’s surroundings are colorful yet her portrait is rough and black and white. Even though she endures entirely too much living on the streets, she is a loving person. She loves animals and tries to take care of injured pigeons. She likes to see the art around the city and stops to enjoy the spring flowers when they are in full bloom.
Antonia is skilled in working and restoring wood, speaks Italian and a little bit of English. She hopes to get a job working with wood or helping at a wood shop so that she may get herself out of her current situation.
In 2014, homelessness in Italy was estimated at 48,000 people, 70% of whom were sleeping on the streets (FEANTSA, 2012; Deutsche Welle, 2014)
