Upon receiving dtails on my individual subject, Muar, I chose to compose a mixed media based art piece inspired by a photo I received from my sponsor, where I used a combination of pencil and watercolour
to capture his charisma. The photo itself resembled a humble, approachable man where the process of his creation allowed me to interpret his overall impression, and reinforced my reflection regarding the subtle and extremem differences in our separate lives in Florence. However, even after living in Florence for ten years, i myself as an Italian-American foreigner from England, can still find common-ground with other migrants or newcomers who seek to find stable work as most do in everyday life, just like Muar. It is for this where I truly love and acknowledge the spiritual and moral basis behind Dignity through Art, and simultaneously enjoying the experimental process with interpretations and techniques as an aspiring artist myself.

Muar
Mixed media 27x35cm
An “economic” migrant. When it was impossible to find any work in Senegal, Muar got together enough money for a flight to Spain and was there for some time before arriving in Italy. He came to Europe in order to find work, so that he could send money back to help his mother and father in Senegal. In the mornings he works as a pedlar outside Carrefour in via Romana. At other times of day he sells umbrellas, helps shopkeepers with heavy lifting and is happy to turn his hands to most jobs. He is good-natured, riendly, well-liked by the regular passers-by, always asks how they are keeping and seems to have faith in God. His short-term ambition would be to go to England; although long-term his heart is with his family in Senegal. He seems to follow current affairs quite closely — and some football!
